Teaching your first TOEFL class?

Whether you took a job teaching TOEFL to a class of students or one of your students approached you about getting help preparing to take the TOEFL below is some advice for teachers who are new to the game.

The TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) is the most widely accepted test of English proficiency in the world. Most higher education institutions recognize TOEFL scores. If a student is going, or wants to go to the USA to study then the TOEFL is a must.

There are 2 main things you should pay attention to before you start teaching a TOEFL class.

1. Know the test
a. There is more than one TOEFL – There are paper-based, computer-based, and Internet-based TOEFL tests. The newest and most widely used form is the Internet-based test.
b. Take the test yourself – If you want to know the test then take a full, timed test yourself. It will really help your class. You may be surprised about how you perform, especially on the speaking section.

2. The best books
a. The Complete Guide to the TOEFL Test by Bruce Rogers. Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Though there may be some argument, this book gets my vote.
b. Developing/Mastering Skills for the IBT TOEFL by Paul Edmunda and Nancie Mckinnon
